Title IX Statement

Types of Positions at OSU
Professional Faculty primarily work in support of an academic, student, or other administrative function. Professional Faculty do not carry academic rank and instead carry a descriptive, professional job title. This group includes those employees who hold Academic Wage appointments that do not carry academic rank.
Academic Faculty primarily perform instructional and/or research work and carry academic rank. Academic faculty are represented by United Academics of Oregon State University (UAOSU) unless the faculty member supervises other academic faculty who are represented by UAOSU. This group includes those employees who hold Academic Wage appointments that carry academic rank.
Classified employees primarily perform work in support of university units in categories such as financial management, outreach and engagement, program administration, research support, information technology support and development, skilled trades, food service, and more. Classified employees are represented by SEIU Local 503, OPEU. This group typically includes represented Temporary employees
Public Safety Professionals are non-supervisory sworn police officers, public safety officers, and communications officers employed by the OSU Department of Public Safety. Public Safety Professionals are represented by Oregon State Public Safety Association (OSPSA).
Public Safety Supervisors are sworn police officers, public safety officers, and communications officers employed by the OSU Department of Public Safety, who supervise other sworn officers, public safety officers, and communications officers employed by the OSU Department of Public Safety. Public Safety Supervisors are represented by the Oregon State University Department of Public Safety Supervisors Association (OSUDPSSA).
There are several types of academic wage positions.
- Short-term, non-recurring work assignments that do not involve teaching responsibilities and last for 90 calendar days or less. They are used for intermittent or sporadic workloads or to provide developmental opportunities for current employees. This group is represented by UAOSU if the position carries academic rank, unless the individual supervises other academic faculty represented by UAOSU.
- OSU retirees who return to work to perform most or all of their previous duties. The group includes previously tenured academic faculty who relinquish tenure, retire from OSU service and return temporarily. OSU retirees who perform work associated with academic faculty are represented by UAOSU unless the retiree supervises other academic faculty represented by UAOSU.
- Summer academic wage appointments are used when a 9-month academic faculty member performs teaching or research duties during the summer period. Summer academic wage appointees hold academic rank and are represented by UAOSU, unless the individual supervises other academic faculty represented by UAOSU.
These roles are filled to meet emergency, nonrecurring, or short-term workload needs for a period of not more than 1040 hours. They are often used to replace regular employees on leave or to handle temporary increases in workload.
These are part-time jobs for students, allowing them to work up to 24 hours a week during the academic term depending on their status. These positions help students gain work experience while studying. Graduate assistants are graduate students who work as graduate teaching assistants (GTA), graduate research assistants (GRA), or a combination of GTA and GRA. An assistantship provides a monthly salary, tuition remission, and an institutional contribution toward mandatory fees and the graduate assistant-only health insurance premium. Teaching assistantships may include leading a discussion, delivering lectures, grading papers, and/or supervising a laboratory. Research assistantships typically assist faculty in conducting research projects. Graduate assistants are represented by the Coalition of Graduate Employees (CGE). Graduate Assistantships are not posted on the OSU Jobs website. Graduate students interested in graduate assistant opportunities should contact departments directly regarding graduate assistant opportunities.
A Postdoctoral Scholar is a mentored position restricted to individuals who have received Ph.D.s (or comparable advanced degrees) within five years and with a three-year maximum duration at OSU. Postdoctoral Scholars are typically mentored by a Principal Investigator to grow their capabilities as a researcher, using an agreed-upon Individual Development Plan. Postdoctoral Scholars are represented by UAOSU unless they supervise academic faculty represented by UAOSU.
Postdoctoral Fellows are typically awarded a fellowship independently by a federal or private agency. This generally means that the fellow has applied to (on their own), and secured funding from, an external funding agency.
